Northshire Grows Inc. is working with Vermont Veterans Home and members of the Vermont Veteran Farmers Coalition to explore how to expand support services and opportunities to Veteran farmers living in Vermont as well as to Veterans looking to relocate to Vermont and start a career in agriculture.
VVH recently launched a monthly Sunday Roast dinner which features Veteran raised meats and produce. Harwood Homestead's local chickens (50!) was featured at the Memorial Day meal. Ashley and Sarah Harwoods's chicken and pork was served at the Pownal Town Picnic on July 4, which celebrated Veteran farming initiatives. Mark Bowen, President of the Vermont Veterans Farm Coalition spoke at this event.
Northshire Grows introduced legislation in the VT House of Representatives during the 2018 Session to improve food security for veterans. This Bill, H-857, introduces a Food Security Grant program housed in the Vermont Agency of Human Services that will make fresh, nutritious food available at Veterans Outreach/CBOC clinics around the state.
